Hidden 2023
A series of portraits taken during a period of overwhelming grief.
After the death of my father in late 2022, I struggled to find ways to cope with my feelings. I tried to find creative outlets which might channel my varying emotions but ended up feeling frustrated and angry. I attempted to continue with ever day life, trying to be sociable but becoming aware that I was masking my feelings from others and pushing my grief further within.
On reflection of some of the work from this period, I realised that my portraits in particular had taken a darker turn and often involved obscureness and contrast.
In stark contrast to my usual creative work which often involves the natural world, these images have tended to have a focus on man made elements and the hidden faces of the sitters seem to reflect the masked nature of my grief; holding things together in order to support the rest of my family, go to work and be present for my children.
